Why are AdSense revenues falling?
Google AdSense has been a cash cow for many publishers since 2003. But one viewer asks "" Why did my AdSense revenue drop in half starting November 18, 2007? And what can I do about it?"

Great info. I've actually been watching my AdSense revenue go up recently. I cleaned up my layout and I've been focused on generating great content. I'm glad to see the day of the generator site behind us (mostly).

I have seen some really off the wall explanations of why people believe their Google earnings have dropped. Yours actually makes sense. Thanks, always enjoy watching your videos!

Joel, your info is spot-on as usual and certainly makes a lot of sense. Certainly the best explanation that I have heard for this phenomena. Thanks for the valuable tips

Hi Joel,
You know I was making a ton of bank with Adsense prior to Nov 2007 using arbitrage and except for dealing with QS this is one thing I never noticed until you pointed it out! Very cool and thanks for the info....

2 Things. First, wauu. I hadn't seen any of your videos lately. How you look much younger with your new look! I didn't recognized you; I thought a new employee had made the video.
Second, you're absolutely right. I saw my income drop from January to February and could not explain. No doubt you have the feeling on these things.

Hi Joel, I always like your the way you put forward theories on adsense. I especially like the precision of it. For example, I heard so much the change in Adsense policy on clickable area but this is the first time I get to learn that 18 November was the implementation date.
Looking forward for some more great videos to clear my doubts....

Hi Joel,
Interesting explanantion. I, like Mark (see above), have also seen my Adsense revenue rise since the beginning of the year.
This, I'm sure, is down to adding quality content regularly to my sites as you suggest.
Thanks for the great advice.

Thanks Joel,
I'd noticed a big drop in my adsense revenue From November. Interestingly enough it's picked back up so far this month. Perhaps it's a seasonal thing too.

In this video response you made reference to 'new contextual networks which we don't even know about yet'. What do you mean by this comment? Please explain.

Very helpful videos. You really help us understand how to go about using adsense to make money. I believe we shouldn't throw away Adsense from our site.
Its potential is huge to let it go. We just need to understand the concept of Adsense to make good use of it.
Thanks again Joel.

Hey Joel,
I can't completely agree with this answer. I do agree that unintended clicks should have been reduced due to this change they made, but in my data I have not seen that play out to a significant margin. I could see a 10% or so drop from this, but this question is about a 50% drop in revenue.
If I had to guess, I'd say that there was a site quality issue that altered what Google showed, or a site design issue that altered the way users clicked (or were led to click) on the AdSense ads.
Looking at the six months prior to November and data to date since then, I've seen a slight drop in CTR, but the eCPM is within a penny!
March 13, 2008 05:06 PM
It's certainly a plausible explanation for some variance in earnings, but if your earnings were cut in half and your AdSense CTR wasn't halved as well, then the reduced "hotspot area" isn't the single cause of reduced earnings.
Google is constantly changing its algorithms for things like Smart Pricing, so you need to look for sharp changes in other metrics too, such as Earnings per Click.

I agree that something else besides the clickable area is in play, and I suspect that this is happens to be associated with the relevancy of the ads.
I didn't see a drop in AdSense revenue since November, 2007. However, for the past several weeks, I have been seeing an almost daily doubling of what I used to get, then a drop to nothing the next day, then a doubling the following day, repeat...
Of course, I have only one site and a small sample size. I was wondering what happened with Google recently. This explanation doesn't fit my observations.

Hi Jeol,
Apart from adsense incomes dripping down, I have another querry. Since few days, I am witnessing an increase in my clicks but the pay per click is not that impressive.
What can you suggest in this scenario?
Should I block some ads, if yes, but then which ads??

Joel,
There is a bid divide within some of the forums regarding Google' new TOS.
Should our sites have a TOS, Privacy Policy or etc pages?
You don't use them on some of your notable sites.
Thanks

We are having a controversy on the AdSense. November was bad but this slow down after the last week in February 2008 has been bad. Ever worse than 11/07 . Everyone is noticing it. Just after we agreed to the new TOS. Everyone is guessing at the Privacy policy. No Privacy Policy and No Clicks.
