I agree he did not answer the question even if I can't say his answer is wrong.

Just use the tool Google deliver to find the best adsense words:
    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Choose a word or site that you want to create about and select Choose data to display: "Cost and add position estimates" and put lets say a price of 40 $ and pick up, you will then find the best adsense words.

PS/ Don't forget to create consistend site around related keywords if you want Google to index your sites

Totally agreed with what you said Joel! Building something you "have to" will soon make you boring. But When you build something you "love to" will make you excited about it and not complain about anything.

Finding niche = Finding what you love. :)

    God bless.

it seems to me there is no shortcut to making money with adsense. Building sites for adsense is not the answer but it we cannot ignore the fact that it has worked for a lot of people. Just the other day you mentioned google is closing accounts for some publishers with built for adsense websites as of June 1 2007. Maybe your way is the way forward joel

  5. Joe Caterisano Says:

Thanks Joel. I heard there are some niches though like (religion and politics) where Adsense is less effective because it covers such a wide spectrum. I pronouce it(nitch)too. I hate when people call it (n eech).

  6. vinny Says:

It is exactly the way to make your adsense revenue grow. I once had 13 cell phone websites and guess what I hated writing about cell phones. Instead I was chasing after the adsense. Now I only write websites and/or blogs that are of intrest to me. Making pages becomes more fun and it doesn't seem like work so I end up creating more valuable content in the long run.

I believe Joel hit the nail exactly on the head, and those who think he didn't answer the question just didn't want to hear the truth.

  8. Sophie Bailson Says:

I think that Joel is totally right and his mum's site is a prime example.

You need to take what you are interested in and then use the google tool to see what you can come up with.

If the cpc is low then it is probably not worth the effort.

If you build a site for adsense or any monetisation you need to keep it updated otherwise it will loose momentum even with the best traffic strategies.

    My strategy is ...
    1) What do I like?
    2) What is the cpc?
    3) What is the competiotion doing?
    4) Are there any affiliate programs?

After I have done the research I can then make an educated decision as to wether it is worth the effort.

Just one comment. When you figure out what you like, see if anyone else is interested befor spending time on building a site.

I agree with AM when he said:

"I believe Joel hit the nail exactly on the head, and those who think he didn't answer the question just didn't want to hear the truth."

Adsense is about publishing good content that people want to read and getting tons of traffic to your site. When you build a site solely to rake in cash, you end up getting a nasty letter from Google...

I think this tutorial make opened my eyes how important to choose a word or site that you want to create about. To many thing that I must knew it before make a site

  13. Veronica Says:

Thanks for your perspective on this Joel. It is appreciated.
    Re pronunciation of niche.
This is a French word and is pronounced "neesh" not Neech or nich. Residents of UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand. South Africa and more all use the French pronunciation of Neesh.
Residents of the USA pronounce it nich (always makes me want to scratch as it sounds like itch lol)
Whatever way you pronounce it is OK as long as people know what you mean.
Now go scratch that itch...oops nich...no, niche...Nah! 'course not, it's Neesh!

    Joel,

I LOVE the layout of this new blog, and am excited to see it up. As far as this video is concerned, I think one of the things people need to realize (particularly the apparently bitter dude who left the first comment) is that building an Internet business is as much about YOU as it is about anything. Like any business, it's success lies on your ability to create concepts, content, and relationships, and most importantly, on your interest in helping other people to become successful.

All that having been said, if you're building an Adsense site about pictures of women (and men? EWWW) in bikinis, you may get a lot of traffic, but it may be harder to generate clicks. So I think some of the recommendations by people above are extremely helpful, as far as doing market research around the things YOU are good at or know something about.

And that is why you have become a "GURU"... because you have an awesome ability to create concepts, content, and REALLY BUILD relationships. And, most importantly, you have a HUGE interest in helping other people to become successful, and have helped a LOT of people make a lot of money.

Keep it up Joel. Love the new format!

  16. Abhishek Says:

First of all let me mention that i earn a 5-figure adsense income every month. And to a great extent, i owe my success to Joel's teachings and his Instant Adsense Templates (part 1 and Part 2). His blogs, and teachings taught me some really cool tips that i have incorporated in my sites. All these have really helped me a lot in my CTR. Thanks Joel!

However, I do not totally agree with Joel on this. If you are interested in a particular niche (btw, i pronounce it as neesh !), it might be really fun to write about it and to create a site on that topic. However, if you want to earn from Adsense, that niche may not necessarily be a profitable niche at all. If you are planning to monetize that site through Adsense, maybe you will never earn enough to even sustain that site.

So, if i have only one passion in life, and if that niche is not a well-paying niche, that means, am doomed as far as adsense is concerned!! Either i have to develop interest in another high-paying niche, or forget about Adsense altogether!

This reminds me that Joel had launched IAT1 and IAT2, each with around 400+ niche templates. I would like to ask you guys, and Joel, what was the purpose of those templates? Why did Joel sell them as a package? Do you think a buyer would be interested in ALL those niches?? Definitely not!!! He would be intersted in just a few niches he is passionate about. So why hundreds of niches ?

Instead, Joel should have said : " Hey, these are the niches i have got. Select the one(s) you are passionate about, each one would cost you $xx. Go and build your sites!!

But being a savvy marketer that he is ( and i truly respect him for who he is ) he sold them as a package because that package targeted people who wanted to make multiple sites and earn from Adsense. After all, most of us are Internet marketers, and we all have to earn. Wasnt this one main reason why Joel sold his IAT packages? At the end of the day, its business, my friends.

And the harsh truth is that, most of the people who actually utilized those templates (including myself) were the ones who followed the Adsense Arbitrage model. What else can a person do with so many templates ?

To answer the question, my experience says that profitable niches are those niches where the Advertiser has got a lot of money to spend. For example, Finance, Law, Health and their sub-niches. Hobbies related niches hardly pay well. Because hobbyists generally dont have enough capital to spend on Adwords. But companies with big advertising budgets do.

In conclusion, i feel that yes, you should make sites that you are passionate about, but Adsense might not be a profitable monetization option for your niche. If you want to earn money through your sites, and if you are considering Adsense as a viable option, you have to diversify into niches that you are NOT intersted in.

Sorry for the long post !!!

    Regards

  17. Bruce - the Notebook Computer Guy Says:

Joel I think hit the nail on the head when he explained the need for us to build and focus on content first and then attach adsense and other monetization methods onto it.
The 'long poster' above also hit on a key point: your niche has to be able to support your expenses in time and money to get traffic to your site. If not, don't do that niche.

Assuming one has a content-driven website, then what should have been added was
other ways to monetize that site besides adsense. The newest one is auction ads and anyone with a generic or specialized niche will find this extremely easy to implement: It's called auction ads. To see one, go to my site http://laptops.recommendedonline.biz , scroll down past the article to recommended products and check them out. There's no conflict with adsense TOS and it's becoming extremely viral. If you haven't heard of them yet, you soon will.
All-in all a great additional way to monetise your content sites and blogs.
    Best wishes to all,
    Bruce
